Network Engineer Co-op

  • Intern Job Responsibilities
    • Understand the company's network architecture, security policies, and operational procedures.
    • Participates in the full lifecycle of network projects, from planning and design to implementation and maintenance.
    • Configures and troubleshoots network devices (routers, switches, wireless access points).
    • Monitors network performance, identifies and resolves issues, and implements performance improvements.
    • Develops and maintains network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
    • Collaborates with other IT teams (e.g., systems engineers, and security engineers) to ensure seamless network integration.
    • Researches and evaluates new networking technologies and solutions.
    • Assists in creating and presenting network performance reports and project updates.

    Roadmap / Weekly Schedule (Example - Can be Adjusted)
    • Month 1:
      • Weeks 1-2: In-depth onboarding to the company's network environment, including network diagrams, documentation, and key technologies. Review of networking fundamentals and company-specific protocols.
      • Weeks 3-4: Hands-on training with network devices, configuration tasks, and troubleshooting scenarios. Introduction to network monitoring and management tools.
    • Month 2:
      • Weeks 1-2: Assignment to a specific network project, working under the guidance of a senior engineer. Participation in project planning and design meetings.
      • Weeks 3-4: Active involvement in project implementation, including device configuration, testing, and documentation.
    • Month 3:
      • Weeks 1-2: Focus on network optimization and performance tuning. Analysis of network traffic patterns and identification of potential bottlenecks.
      • Weeks 3-4: Deep dive into network security, including firewall configuration, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and security best practices.
    • Month 4:
      • Weeks 1-2: Project wrap-up, including final testing, documentation updates, and knowledge transfer to the team.
      • Weeks 3-4: Preparation and delivery of a final presentation summarizing the co-op experience, project contributions, and lessons learned.
    Intern Qualifications / Skills
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent organization and time management skills
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving  abilities  
    • Solid understanding of networking concepts and protocols (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, etc.)
    • Experience with network configuration (e.g., HPE Networking Aruba, Juniper Junos) is a plus.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
    • Proactive and eager to learn
    • Professionalism

    Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements
    • Current student in the 3rd or 4th year of a college program (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related field).
    • Prior networking coursework or projects are highly desirable.
    • Experience with network simulation tools
    • Industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, Network+) are a significant advantage, but not required.
